A person wishing to hire a Fairfax County attorney can choose between two public referral services: the Fairfax Bar Association and the Virginia Lawyer Referral Service. These services are similar in many ways but differ in others.
The Fairfax Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service is the local referral service for Fairfax County residents. The service costs $40 to use which entitles you to one attorney referral. That attorney will provide a free 30 minute consultation which should be utilized to determine the attorney's suitability. The service will take up to a couple days to find you an attorney from their system. Any attorney in good standing who has passed the bar can be part of the service.
The Virginia State Bar Lawyer Referral Service is the statewide referral service operated by the Virginia State Bar. This service cost $35 and provides clients with one attorney who will give a free 30 minute consultation. The attorneys are required to be in good standing with the bar but there does not appear to be any more extensive criteria. Additionally, clients are not given information about the attorneys aside from how long they have practiced, what law school the attorney went to and if he or she is a solo practitioner or part of a law firm.
The local bar lawyer referral services will find you an attorney but their matching criteria are limited. A client does not have much input in the selection process and the client must do a considerable amount of work on his or her own to determine suitability.
